Made of hardened steel, it can be used on its own as a simple gauge to check if a case has stretched beyond its maximum safe length. When paired with a Lee Cutter and Lock Stud (sold separately), it also works as a no-measure trimmer to bring all cases to a precise, uniform length. For revolver cartridges like the .38 Special, trimming all cases to the same length is key to applying a uniform roll crimp, which is essential for preventing bullets from shifting under recoil and for achieving better accuracy.
